Odisha Braces for Prolonged Summer, Irregular Monsoon, and Drought Risk in 2026

Long summer, less rain! Bhubaneswar, 3112 (Bureau): The summer period may be prolonged. Even during the rainy season, the heat may be felt like summer. Not only that, the rain will decrease. The rainy season will be irregular. Some will be there, and some will be dry. The monsoon may be lost in between. Such ruthless weather in 2026 may disrupt life. Eminent meteorologist Professor Surendranath Pashupalak has predicted such extreme weather for 2026 based on long-term models. He said that the three states of NSE (La-Nina, El-Nima, Neutral) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) criteria affect the water cycle. For the last five years, India has been experiencing average rainfall. Due to La-Nina condition, Odisha has been receiving normal or above-normal rainfall for 2 years. 2026 Weather Forecast 0 El-Nino is coming by the end of June 0 Obstacles in the monsoon path, concern for farmers Currently, there is a La-Nina condition. After January, a neutral condition will come, which will last for about 3 months. El-Nino condition is likely to come by the end of June. With the increase in El-Nino condition, rainfall becomes irregular or less. Similarly, if IOD is positive, there is good rainfall and if it is negative, there is less rainfall. Now IOD is negative. After 3 months, a neutral condition will come. After that, the possibility of becoming positive is less. This also shows signs that this year will be less rainfall. The model predicts that the temperatures in February-March will be normal or slightly higher. Temperatures may be above normal from April onwards. However, the El Niño condition is likely to prolong the hot period by the end of June. If the summer period extends, abnormal heat may also occur in June, July and August. The concern is that the weather will be adverse for the monsoon due to the El Niño phenomenon. Due to this, the rainfall will be hampered. If the rainfall decreases in July and August, agriculture will be seriously affected. During this time, the paddy sowing work goes ahead. If the bill dries up, there may be a risk of drought. In 2023, the state experienced a terrible heat wave due to the El Niño effect. In 2025, the summer period was not so painful. The rainfall was also good. Even the winter is longer this time due to the La Nina condition.
